Role: Designer
4 months
I was given the opportunity to design a mobile application for a sewage management system that uses IoT. The project ran for 3 months with additional time for revision. I was in charge of the overall design of the app for start to end. The company also asked me to do a bit of branding work.
During the span of the project, the company has already determine some of the pages that they need to have. Instead of working from scratch, I began to design the pages based on their lo-fi wireframe. To summarize, my tasks consist of:
In this project, we took a goal-directed design approach that proved to be quite effective in our design efforts. I analyzed their old app and work from there; conducted the Heuristic Evaluation and determined which part that needs improvement. From there, we already have a foundation to work off from. Also, we found qualitative research methods to be the most useful, consisting of a kickoff meeting, scope of work, and the timeline for the project. We started out by asking ourselves some initial key questions.
"What is the product and who is it for?"
"What do our primary users need most?"
"What can we improve from the previous version?"
Developed by Utility Systems, Science & Software Inc., Sewer IQ is one of their product to measure sewer flow monitoring by using IoT. By implementing IoT in their product, the company offers a solution to businesses on how to reduce the cost of acquiring their data, which customers can see their flow data within minutes after the installation.
The flow data from the sensors will be shown inside their app in real-time, which this project is all about.
Utility Systems, Science & Software Inc. is a B2B company, hence their users are other businesses or the government to track sewer flow and levels. With this in mind, I think that the best way to approach this is to focus on improving the interface and focus more on the practicality of the app rather than adding features that would not be useful for our users.
By working with an internal team that already has a direction where they're heading, most of my job is to improve the interface of the app.
We constructed a user flow based on our old website and also added some new pages that we would like to incorporate in our new website.
We started off our design process with sketching. Through this stage, we know better what our app would look like based on the user flow.
We turned our ideas into low fidelity wireframes. We reviewed what was necessary and what areas needed improvement. We poured a lot of our time into this step to make sure we had the finishing touches on the underlying UX before moving onto the visuals.
